There are some things that every man should know, whether it’s the correct way to wear a suit or how to cook the perfect steak. Below we’ve rounded up some of our favourite manly life hacks for you to make everyday living that bit easier.
Roll Shirt Sleeves the Right Way
Did you know you have probably been doing this wrong your whole life? Us neither until we tried this method – instead of rolling the cuff repeatedly up your arm, flip it back and pull to just underneath your elbow. Then, take the bottom of the sleeve and fold it up so it traps the cuff – voila, shirt sleeves that don’t unroll.
The 3 Button Suit Rule
This is another revelation for us, apparently there is a 3 button rule for suit jackets. It goes as follows:
Top button – Sometimes (this is at the discretion of the wearer)
Middle button – Always
Bottom button – Never (the bottom button should always remain unfastened as it interferes with the tailoring of the jacket)
The Finger Test – how to cook the perfect steak
There are several methods you can use to make sure your steak is cooked just the way you like. This is one of the best because it’s easy to remember and carry out. First, bring your thumb and index finger together until they are touching – when you press your finger on the fleshy part beneath your thumb it should feel soft and bouncy, which is how a rare steak should be. Next, touch your ring finger and thumb together – again, feel the fleshy part beneath your thumb which should feel a little firmer, this is how a medium steak should feel. Finally, touch your little finger and thumb together – there should be no give now when you press your finger under your thumb and it will feel quite firm, which is how a well done steak should feel. Easy peasy.
Know How to Make An Old Fashioned
The Old Fashioned is a classic cocktail and easy to make, and as Don Draper’s drink of choice in the popular series Mad Men, it is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Place a sugar cube into an old-fashioned glass and pour over 2 dashes of bitters and a little water – muddle this together until the sugar dissolves. Fill the glass with ice cubes and add 2 shots or your chosen bourbon or rye whiskey. Garnish with an orange slice and maraschino cherry.
Repair Damaged Wood
If you rub a walnut on areas of damaged wood, it will be looking good as new in no time- seriously. Just rub the walnut over the affected area and you should barely be able to tell it was damaged before.
